STOCKHOLM (Reuters) - TikTok has hired British cybersecurity firm NCC to audit data controls and protections and provide independent verification of the social media company's data security regime dubbed "Project Clover."
Several government bodies have banned TikTok from employee phones amid growing concerns about the company, which is owned by Chinese firm ByteDance, and whether the Chinese government could collect user data to advance its interests.
As part of the TikTok regime, it is opening three data centers – two in Ireland and one in Norway – to store user data in Europe.
Ireland's first data center is now online and TikTok has started migrating data. The remaining data centers will be up and running by the end of 2024, Elaine Fox, Europe's head of privacy, said in a media call.
"We are not waiting for our European data centers to be fully operational ... we have already started to store personal data for our EEA and UK users by default in a dedicated secure area known as the European enclave, which is hosted in the US for the time being," she said.
In the coming months, TikTok and the NCC said they will be engaging with policymakers across Europe to explain how the system will work in practice.
TikTok announced Project Clover in March amid growing pressure from lawmakers on both sides of the Atlantic over data security.
In a major move to strengthen its commitment to the security of user data, TikTok recently announced its partnership with the UK's National Cyber Security Center (NCC). This collaboration signals the social media giant's proactive approach to improving its data protection measures and aligning with the latest industry standards and regulations.
