Two weeks ago, 18-year-old Ana Mayers experienced zero gravity in space. Oh, and she went with her mom.

The pair, along with former Olympian Jon Goodwin, were on Virgin Galactic's first tourist flight - making them the first mother-daughter duo to fly into space together.

Fast forward a fortnight and Ana is heading to the University of Aberdeen to continue studying philosophy and physics.

BBC Newsbeat caught up with the student before she flew back to Scotland from Antigua in the Caribbean, where she lives.

"The whole experience was so bonding and emotional," she says.

"It's just an incredibly beautiful sight, it's unbelievable.

"It made me much more aware of the fact that we need to appreciate the earth and take this opportunity to really explore and find a connection with nature."

Ana and her mum Keisha Schahaff, 46, won their place on the journey of a lifetime after winning the competition.

And Ana says she was actually sleeping in her university hallways when she found out.

"My mom FaceTimed me that night at a really random time and it was just my face on the screen, you couldn't see anything else," he says.

“Richard Branson picked up the phone, I was amazed.

The pair, along with 80-year-old Jon, launched on August 10 from Spaceport America in New Mexico.

The flight lasted about 90 minutes and they experienced zero gravity at an altitude of around 85 km (280,000 ft) where they got a very special view of the planet.

Unsurprisingly, there was a lot of training to prepare the space tourists for their journey, but Ana says she had "no nerves" when it was finally time to take off.

"It feels like you're flying like a normal commercial flight, it was very calm," he says.

"But I remember when they started counting down, like they said three minutes to release, one minute to release, I was like, 'Oh my God, this is really happening.'

“I was so full of excitement.

Ana says she doesn't feel like she has "been as preoccupied with anything in my life" as a trip to space.

And now that she's back on Earth, a lot of people are starting to look up to her as an inspiration.

“I am very honored to be able to inspire so many people,” he says.

“I certainly hope it opens people's minds, not just to space, but to other things in life.

“I hope it inspires them to take themselves really seriously and put in the work and effort.

“You really have to be open and ready for opportunities to find you.
