The US has approved the transfer of US-made F-16 fighter jets from Denmark and the Netherlands to Ukraine once Ukrainian pilots are fully trained to operate them.
"This way, Ukraine can take full advantage of its new capabilities," said a spokesman for the US State Department.
Ukraine appreciated the decision, which it has been pushing hard since last year.
However, it is expected to be months before Kyiv is able to use F-16s to counter Russian air superiority.
The Dutch are believed to have about 24 operational F-16s due to be phased out and replaced by more advanced warplanes.
Denmark also plans to upgrade its fleet with around 30 F-16s.
The US and its allies have previously ruled out providing F-16s to Ukraine, fearing it would lead to further escalation with nuclear-armed Russia.
Russia, which launched a large-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, has yet to publicly comment on the issue.
Both Denmark and the Netherlands have received "formal assurances" to transfer their F-16 multirole warplanes, a US State Department spokesman said.
The spokesman added that this would happen "once the first group of pilots completes their training".
Dutch Foreign Minister Wopke Hoekstra welcomed the US decision, saying "it marks an important milestone for Ukraine to defend its people and its country".
"We will now discuss this topic further with our European partners," he wrote in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.
His words were echoed by Danish Defense Minister Jakob Ellemann-Jensen.
"The government has said several times that donation is a natural next step after training. We are discussing this with close allies," he told Danish news agency Ritzau.
In Ukraine, Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov called the US decision "great news".
"Our military has proven to be full of quick learners. We will soon prove that the victory of Ukraine is inevitable. Thank you to all our partners and friends in the United States, the Netherlands and Denmark. Forward to victory!" wrote on X.
An 11-member coalition of Ukraine's allies in the West is due to begin training Ukrainian pilots later this month and they are expected to be ready next year.
Earlier this week, Ukrainian Air Force spokesman Yuriy Ihnat admitted that Kyiv would not be able to operate the F-16 this coming fall and winter.
The F-16 Fighting Falcon is widely regarded as one of the most reliable combat aircraft in the world.
It can be armed with precision-guided missiles and bombs and is capable of flying at speeds of 2,400 km/h, according to the US Air Force.
The targeting capabilities of the F-16 would allow Ukraine to attack Russian forces in all weather conditions and at night with greater accuracy.
Ukraine is believed to have dozens of fighter jets - mostly MiGs - all dating back to the Soviet era, and the country is currently heavily outgunned by Russia in the air.
Kiev needs modern warplanes to help protect its skies from regular deadly Russian missile and drone strikes, as well as to support its counteroffensive in southern and eastern Ukraine, which has so far produced limited results.
