ISLAMABAD: Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar on Friday directed customs and law enforcement agencies to strictly curb smuggling of sugar, petroleum products, urea, agricultural products and other items.
He chaired a high-level meeting to stop smuggling in Pakistan.
During the meeting, he was informed about the situation of smuggling of various items across the country, especially in the border areas, and the steps taken to stop it.
The meeting was told that 10 more check posts of law enforcement agencies have been announced to curb smuggling in Balochistan.
The Prime Minister ordered that an inter-agency report should be prepared on officers involved in smuggling in the province.
He ordered a strong detachment against officers involved in smuggling in Balochistan and gave them exemplary punishment. He said smuggling of petroleum products reduces revenue and puts pressure on the country's foreign exchange reserves.
He said he would chair a weekly meeting to review the performance of the institutions and curb the menace of smuggling.
He ordered that the border markets with Iran be made more viable to trade with proper documents. He said that smuggling causes billions of rupees of loss to the national economy and it is essential to end the problem of smuggling.
The Prime Minister was told that smuggling has been reduced by 40 percent due to tireless efforts of law enforcement agencies. He was introduced to the anti-smuggling strategy of the police forces.

The meeting was attended by Caretaker Federal Commerce Minister Gohar Ejaz, Interior Minister Sarfraz Ahmed Bugti, Petroleum Minister Muhammad Ali, Advisor to Prime Minister Ahmed Cheema, Federal Secretaries, Chairman Federal Board of Revenue and senior law enforcement officials.
Provincial Chief Secretaries of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan and Inspector Generals of Police attended the meeting through video link.
