How one family went in search of a mythical wave

What if you found a hidden treasure on an island in the North Atlantic, not gold or gems, but something so precious and precious to surfers - a beautiful wave that no one has surfed before?

That was the dream that inspired Matt Knight, 59, a renowned captain, adventurer and surfer, to follow clues from a 19th-century treasure hunter's journal.

"That was what really started the whole thing," he said.

“My grand old sailor bequeathed a library full of wonderful old sailor yarns from his grandfather.

"And one day when I was visiting there, he pulled this particular book off the shelf and said 'read this.'

Savage Waters by Victorian adventurer and sailor EF Knight - no relation - was "basically a treasure hunt story", Matt explained.

How one family went in search of a mythical wave

The author was informed that Spanish gold was buried on the rocks called the Wild Islands, so he and a group of adventurers set out to search for it in what is now a nature reserve north of the Canary Islands.

“They were picking their way through the reefs looking for a place to anchor when they were suddenly confronted by this huge breaking wave that came out of nowhere,” Matt said.

“He was crashing on a hidden cliff that was just under the water, and he described this monstrous wave coming up from the depths that created this giant ridge, under the edge of which a cave formed that was lit by a beautiful green light.

"And reading it with surfer's eyes, of course, I just go, wow, that sounds incredible. I thought if it broke in 1891, it's probably still breaking now."

The father-of-four, from Georgeham, North Devon, told fellow surfers Andrew "Cotty" Cotton, from North Devon, and Alex Botel, and Devon filmmaker Mikey Corker, about Knight's story, and together they "conceived the idea" to search. the waves themselves.

A film about their journey, Savage Waters, chronicles the subsequent "curves" the family and team faced in 2015 as they ventured into "relatively uncharted waters" armed with a Victorian text.

“On the Wilds there are two main islands and then lots of reefs and then miles of ocean between them and all around you,” Matt said.

“We made it all the way there, which is quite a mission in itself because it's really sketchy and scary and the weather changes quite quickly.

"We found the Savage Islands all right and looked around. I'd passed them three times on previous Atlantic voyages and didn't even know they were there."

"Then the weather changed and there was a storm and we had to set sail again in a hurry."

Portugal and Matt's wife Suzanne were diagnosed with advanced skin cancer melanoma.

"All priorities and perspectives have changed," Matt said.

“Cotty had to work pretty hard to get through the recovery and then the comeback.

"Suzanne was really lucky to get into the experimental immunotherapy trial, she was one of the lucky ones who seemed to respond."

In 2020, Suzanne and their surfer kids Taz and Peony on board, as well as surfer Ed Smith and filmmaker Mikey, made it to the Savage Islands again and this time they scored.

"It was quite emotional to find that wave, it's been a long journey and there's been so much going on in the background that it's left us all devastated," Matt said.

“When we finally got out there and surfed the waves, it was definitely an emotional experience.

“But the healing journey and the human stories were as much a treasure as surfing an amazing wave.

"So the film is not just an adventure story, it's also about life really throwing curves... it's about people whose spirit and mind carry them through adversity."

Matt said he hoped the inspirational stories of the film's main characters would resonate with people. However, he added that there are "still unfinished business" in this part of the world.

"There are definitely more waves," he said, but the risks are high.

"To be 100% safe, you almost need helicopters and jet skis to really have a safety cover in place to actually find the treasure. But for me, it was a journey and an experience that was as much a treasure as the wave."
