The Philippines could seize opportunities in Africa by establishing stronger ties with Ethiopia: President Marcos

Addis Ababa, August 16, 2023 (ENA): The Philippines could seize economic opportunities in Africa by forging a stronger partnership with Ethiopia, one of the region's major economies, Philippine President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. said.

President Marcos said this when he welcomed Ethiopian Ambassador Dessie Dalkie Dukamo in Malacañang on Tuesday.

Speaking on the occasion, the President said that as Africa continues to develop as a major emerging economy, the Philippines could seize the opportunity by forming a stronger partnership with Ethiopia, one of the region's major economies.

In his remarks, the President noted how excited the whole world is about Africa's growth.

"I think the whole world is very excited about where most of Africa is in terms of -- now up and coming ... as the major economy that they are."

The Philippines and Ethiopia, he said, can explore many things in terms of trade, technology transfer and other exchanges.

He noted that the Philippines has identified agriculture as a priority sector due to the need to support the needs of the Filipino people as well as keep the rest of the economy, including the service and manufacturing sectors, the foundation of the country's development.

Ambassador Dessie said Ethiopia sees the development trajectory of the Philippines as something to look at.

"We know how the Philippines is developing from traditional agriculture to service and manufacturing, especially in technical and vocational education. The way the Philippines is making its people... skilled, dedicated and productive," he said.

“We know the Philippines well through its workers. We are so grateful and have a lot to share in business and industry. We can share a lot from the fastest growing economy. Ethiopia is now also getting bigger, step by step (becoming) a big country and the largest economy in East Africa with huge potential for trade and investment.

Filipino businessmen can invest in Ethiopia's industrial area, especially with their expertise in manufacturing especially electronics that they could introduce to Ethiopia, he said, noting that his country, apart from being a big country in Africa, is also a gateway to the region.
