A glittering, 1.5-metre-long gold ball gown took pride of place in a Shanghai exhibition hall on Thursday – and for the cool price of $13,700, your dog could be the lucky animal to leave Pet Fair Asia in it.
The plethora of luxury and sophisticated gadgets on display at the show, the largest in the region, is a testament to the consumer power of China's expanding class of young, tech-savvy pet owners.
From robot companions to AI-powered wearable health monitoring devices, animal welfare is a lucrative industry – and if all else fails, there's also the option of cloning a beloved pet in China these days.
"If you have a puppy, it's like your own child," a young dog owner named Song told AFP. “Anyone who's raised someone knows... They hold a huge place in your heart.
Pet ownership in China has skyrocketed, reaching nearly 100 million households in 2022.
Analysts attribute the growth to younger generations, with Deloitte saying that "changing views on family structure and the increase in the number of singles" were a big reason for the boom.
"Young people are more individualistic, they don't want to sacrifice their whole lives (to raise children) like previous generations, so they hope that by raising an animal they will immediately get that intimacy and warmth... but they won't spend so much time and energy," said a young woman at the fair on Thursday named Duan.
And owners spend a lot of money on their furry family.
The $13,700 dog dress - which comes with a matching tiara - is hand-embroidered and designed for a dog's wedding, stall manager Sun Chao told AFP, adding that they usually receive around a few dozen orders a year for such designs.
"The overall economic environment in our country has not been very good in the past few years, but the pet market is in a league of its own," Sun said.
The industry is expected to grow 68 percent to 811 billion yuan ($112 billion) by 2025, according to iiMedia Research.
Forever together with technology
Pet Fair Asia runs for several days and organizers say its scale this year is unprecedented.
It features more than 2,000 exhibitors selling items as varied as tofu cat litter, dried tree frog and dog donuts and macarons.
In a nod to the region's intense work culture, remote tracking devices were commonplace, allowing busy owners to monitor their pets from a distance.

The next iteration will use artificial intelligence to help interpret the pet's movements and react accordingly.
Technology is even used to overcome death.
At the booth of the Chinese company Sinogene, visitors crowded around a cage of identical playful terriers in harnesses emblazoned with the words "I am a cloned dog."
The company is one of the few in the world to offer animal cloning services – allowing pets and their owners to be "together forever", as its slogan states.
A representative surnamed Dai told AFP they had cloned about 500 animals for Chinese customers since starting in 2017, including some for the country's security services.
Cloning a dog costs between $30,000 and $60,000, depending on its breed.
In the beginning, Dai said, the business was met with wariness from consumers.
"But with the development of the economy and people's dependence on pets ... slowly people began to learn about cloning and accept it," he said.
While most of the show was for cats and dogs, there were signs that more exotic tastes were starting to take off.
Eager to appeal to pet lovers with cash to burn, the electric car company has been handing out flyers and stickers featuring a dispassionate-looking alpaca.
In one exhibit hall, a kaleidoscope of snakes writhed around in small plastic containers, and a small scrum formed around a box full of meerkats.
Meanwhile, the capybara studiously ignored the onlookers' overtures as it munched its way through the grass.
