Chinese Defense Minister Li Shangfu and Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko celebrated plans to boost military cooperation between the two nations in Minsk on Thursday.
"All our cooperation - and it is very significant - is in no way directed against third countries. We don't need that. We have to protect our states and our peoples," Lukashenko said, according to the Belarusian state news agency Belta.
Li added: "My visit to Belarus aims to implement important agreements at the level of heads of state and further strengthen bilateral military cooperation."
The military cooperation agreement was concluded during Lukashenko's state visit to China earlier this year.
The joint military exercise is expected to be conducted in 2024, Lukashenko said. The autocratic leader emphasized that Belarus relies primarily on its "friends" Russia and China for military aid.
Belarus and China are on the same page when it comes to building a multipolar world, he said. Like Russian President Vladimir Putin, Lukashenko often opposes what he describes as US hegemony.
Thousands of Russian troops are stationed in Belarus, and Lukashenko has allowed Russia to use his country as a staging area for attacks on Ukraine.
Kyiv perceives Minsk as a warring party. Russia has deployed Iskander missiles equipped with nuclear warheads in Belarus.
Since Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Putin's nuclear threats have drawn international criticism on several occasions.
In a major move aimed at strengthening international alliances and enhancing defense cooperation, China's defense chief is embarking on a key mission to Belarus. This strategic effort underscores the growing military cooperation between the two nations as they forge stronger ties for regional security and global stability.
