Ella Fanning and Nicholas Hoult's Emmy Award-winning crazy show The Great has been canceled

Hulu's hit show The Great, starring Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult, will not be renewed for a 4th season.

Created, written and executive produced by Tony McNamara, The Great reinvents period drama by revisiting the life of Catherine the Great, the reigning empress of Russia from 1762 to 1796.

The show's official description claims that Catherine is “an idealistic, romantic young girl who arrives in Russia for an arranged marriage to the mercurial Emperor Peter. Hoping for love and sunshine, he finds instead a dangerous, corrupt and backward world that he sets out to change. All she has to do is kill her husband, beat up the church, confuse the army and get a trial.”

The series, which released its third season in May, chronicled the iconic character and her place in history in a genre-bending show.

While the season 3 finale wasn't exactly a cliffhanger, it does end with Catherine showing tremendous growth as ruler (while sporting a new hairstyle). He also dances to AC/DC.

The show has received rave reviews and acclaim throughout its run, with seven Emmy nominations since its 2020 launch.

It won an Emmy for Outstanding Period Costume Design in 2022, the same year Fanning and Hoult received their first nominations for starring in the popular series. Fanning has also received numerous other awards for her performance as Catherine, including a SAG, Critics Choice, Independent Spirit Award, and two Golden Globe nominations, via Deadline.

In addition to Hoult and Fanning, the show features Phoebe Fox, Adam Godley, Gwilym Lee, Charity Wakefield, Douglas Hodge, Sacha Dhawan, Bayo Gbadamosi and Belinda Bromilow.
