Underneath all that rust is an old four-cylinder that's begging to be cleaned again.
Kawasaki is one of the most influential motorcycle brands in the world and I'm sure we all know the Ninja name. I'm sure we've sat on at least one Ninja at some point. Failing that, I'm sure we've seen at least a few to a dozen ninjas in the city, corners, or on the racetrack, but you've probably never seen a ninja in this state, or not.
Unless you ride motorcycles for a living, or have a friend who is really bad at taking care of his bike, or for whatever reason, you have to wonder how much neglect this 1989 ZX-4R went through to rot like this. like this. Rust is everywhere and the entire bike is stained with oxidation from head to toe and is in very poor condition. Fortunately, The Restorator was here to help bring this vintage Green Team sports bike back to life.
It all starts with the crate. It was an unboxing experience to say the least and the box was in much better condition compared to the bike. It looks like the bike has actually been ridden for a while and it's likely that the previous owner had a bit of fun turning it into a streetfighter before finally letting it rot away. There was no sign of the old original fairings at all, so the Restorer had to come up with a solution.

There's a round headlight, the engine is well past its factory exterior trim, and there's no battery in sight. Quite shockingly, the motorcycle's starter and wiring harness still worked and all it needed to start was a new battery. Even with a little starter fluid, the bike still refused to start and would turn over all the way. There were a few signs of life, but more work needed to be done before the ZX-4R could breathe freely.
After checking the condition of the engine, it's time to start completely disassembling the motorcycle. Removing rust from every bolt, bending every radiator fin, polishing and freshening up every part took the better part of an hour and the video was already sped up.
The rest of the video is pretty straightforward. All parts are sanded down, primed and sprayed with paint and everything finds its way back to itself and onto the bike. New fluids are filled into their reservoirs and voila, we have a restored and running motorcycle. It's not the most perfect restoration job in the world, but getting that rust off and getting the bike running has been a long road for The Restorator.
