The Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) has no problems with the possible delay of general elections due to re-delimitation of constituencies in line with the 2023 census, party convener Dr Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui said on Sunday.
Addressing the press alongside party leader Farooq Sattar, Siddiqui said the elections should be held after the delimitation of constituencies as per the 2023 census.
“Though Karachi needs transparent elections as soon as possible, if the delimitation of constituencies takes weeks or months, it is not a bad deal,” the MQM-P convener said.
He said that in previous elections, "fake representatives were imposed" on the city.
"No one else has been disenfranchised the way we have been," he said, adding that Karachi is a city that needs elections as soon as possible.
However, he added that the elections must be fair, transparent, impartial and acceptable to all.
"Who are these people who emphasize old constituencies instead of new constituencies?" he asked.
He added that millions of new voters were registered in the new census, adding that the delimitation of new constituencies was inevitable after the new census.
Based on the latest census, it was determined that Karachi should see an increase of approximately four seats in the Provincial Assembly and one seat in the National Assembly. However, depending on whether the delimitation of constituencies is done at the divisional or district level, these numbers may vary.
If the delimitation was done at the divisional level, the number of provincial assembly seats in Karachi could increase by four and one seat in the National Assembly.
Conversely, if delimitation occurs at the district level, Karachi could gain three more provincial seats and one National Assembly seat.
The National Census Report released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics on 6 August stated that Karachi has a share of 22.23% in the Provincial Assembly and 47.57% in the National Assembly seats.
Besides, the report revealed that one National Assembly seat from Shaheed Benazirabad and two Provincial Assembly seats from Hyderabad, one each from Sukkur and Larkana, will be redistributed to Karachi.
Two seats, including one provincial assembly seat and one national assembly seat, would be shifted in South district, with the remaining three seats in Central, East and Malir districts.
"A Country Heading for Civil Disobedience"
In the same press, commenting on the increase in electricity tariffs and its burden on consumers, party leader Dr. Farooq Sattar lashed out at the ruler and said, "People are becoming rebels and this country is heading towards civil disobedience."
If this trend continues, a "state within a state" will emerge, he said, adding that the MQM-P will stand in solidarity "wherever there is protest".
"No single party can solve Karachi's problems," Dr Sattar said.
While Maqbool said the circular debt in the power sector is due to the incompetence and failure of the government.
"The crises are the result of conflict between the federation and the provinces," he said, adding that the country was facing a crisis "of intent more than an economic crisis."
During the press conference, Maqbool also spoke about the rising street crime in Karachi
