Senior leaders of the Pakistan People's Party (PPP) on Friday expressed their reservations against the likely delay in holding general elections, saying such delays would be unacceptable to the party leadership.

Speaking at a press conference along with party members at Bilawal House in Karachi after the Central Executive Committee (CEC) meeting, Senator Sherry Rehman said that the CEC of the party had categorically said that if the elections were delayed by more than 90 days, the country would be involved. in crisis.

Rehman emphasized that the elections should be held within a time frame of 90 days and any delay in the electoral process should be avoided on the basis of delimitation of constituencies. She added that a PPP delegation would soon meet Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) officials to discuss the matter.

Party Chairman Faisal Karim Kundi also expressed his views on the situation on the occasion, saying that the announcement of by-elections in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa by ECP indicates that early general elections may also be held nationally on time.

Former Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah said his party wanted the elections to be held on time, adding that they should not be delayed due to the census.

He also said that the ECP does not require fresh delimitation to hold general elections. "The constitution says that elections must be held within 90 days [of the dissolution of the National Assembly]," he added.

Another PPP leader, Nayyar Bukhari, said that a decision on the ECP would be reached during the CEC meeting in Lahore and that the next meeting would determine the way forward.

"Our delegation will meet ECP officials and then our future course of action will be discussed at the next CEC meeting [scheduled in Lahore]," he added.

A senior ECP official clarified that there is no need to announce the date of general elections immediately as there is a deadline of September 12. Another official noted that the ECP could potentially extend that date to September 20.
