As nationwide protests broke out and social media hashtags against the massive electricity bills started popping up, caretaker Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar finally called an "emergency meeting" on August 27 (Sunday) on electricity rates.
The prime minister called a meeting in Islamabad on electricity rates and consumer bills with instructions to the power ministry and electricity distribution companies to provide detailed information in this regard.
The meeting, a PM Office statement said, will hold consultations on maximum relief to consumers on electricity bills.

On the occasion, business leaders and representatives of Jamaat-e-Islami expressed their concerns. “We reject the exorbitant charges that K-Electric levies in our electricity bills,” said the shop manager, adding that JI always takes a stand on the problems of the masses.
Amir Hafiz Naeemur Rehman of JI Karachi warned the protesters that if the government continues to burden the public, the situation may further deteriorate. "Our fight is against the white-collar mafia in KE," he confirmed and underlined the commitment to represent the interests of the people.
A demonstration against additional electricity charges was held in Rawalpindi, with citizens chanting slogans against the Islamabad Electric Supply Company.
Besides, protests were also held in Lahore, Attock, Peshawar, Quetta, Towns, Hyderabad, Nawabshah, Rahim Yar Khan and Multan against inflated electricity bills. A large number of people participated in the demonstration.
