The former home of writer and environmentalist Roger Deakin has been put on the market for £1.5 million.
Deakin, who died aged 63 in 2006, lived in the 16th-century cottage in Mellis, Suffolk, for almost 40 years.
When he found it in 1969, it was "covered in a moldy thatched roof," the estate agent said, but he later renovated it.
Deakin once wrote of his house: "An old house may be built of the humblest, simplest materials, and, like a bird's nest, may be a thing of great beauty."
Estate agency Inigo said Deakin was "immediately captivated" by the estate, which had been unoccupied for nearly 20 years before he bought it and owned it in September 1970.
After "a whirlwind of restoration and learning new trades," his home was completed in the mid-1970s.
In its marketing brochure, the estate agent said: “Set amongst 12 acres of wide rolling meadows on Mellis Common in the heart of the Suffolk countryside, Listed Walnut Tree Farm II is held in loving esteem by many.
"The house, famous from the book of the same name, Notes from a Walnut Farm, was the home of popular author, artist and environmentalist Roger Deakin."
Since his death, the current owners, who spent time in the house as children, have been "careful stewards" of his legacy, she said.
In addition to the house, there are also three other living spaces outside, a railway carriage, an outbuilding and a farm house.
Inigo said the railway carriage, which was salvaged and installed on the farm in the 1980s, was used as guest accommodation by the current owners and hosted many "Deakinites" on pilgrimage.
While the shed "offers incredible views of long fields stretching to what seems almost the horizon", in the shepherd's hut Deakin often camped out to write and "escape the permanence of the house which he thought hindered his best inspiration" .
The interiors have been preserved in their original form and features, he added.
