The Hopebotics device brings treatment to stroke patients at home, while hospitals monitor progress remotely.
As people age, they often visit hospitals; and acceptance in relation to the scale of the aging population can be overwhelming. But as preventive and home care is developing around the world, treatment can now be done remotely.
That was one of the goals of Hong Kong startup Hopebotics, which is to develop a device to help stroke patients recover quickly without having to visit the hospital all the time.
One device they created is called the HandTasker. It uses a flexible actuator and 3D printing technology to adapt the soft hand robot to the natural movement of the hand. The device is also customizable and can fit patients with different hand sizes and stiffness levels.
To help hospitals and therapists easily monitor the condition of patients, HandTasker comes with real-time monitoring of muscle spasticity.
Basically, HandTasker helps elderly people do easy and light tasks like picking up the phone, typing or grabbing food.
"Elderly people can still be independent if they can recover better from therapy and can still live a normal life," said Raymond Tong, co-founder of Hopebotics, Healthcare Asia.
When using HandTasker, Tong said patient visits will go from weekly to monthly.
To promote the use of HandTasker, Hopebotics has worked with hospitals to rehabilitate stroke patients.
Currently, Hopebotics is actively working with an NGO, the Hong Kong Stroke Association and the Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital in Chai Wan, Hong Kong.
Hope and robotics
Hopebotics, as the name suggests, is a combination of "hope" and "robotics," as the company's technology enables stroke patients to live healthy lives even as they age.
Tong, who is a biomedical engineer, and his co-founders Zheng Li and David Shi founded Hopebotics Co. Ltd. with the goal of providing the latest soft wearable robotics for stroke rehabilitation.
Before they could create a lighter robotic arm for stroke patients in 2012, Tong had already produced a robotic system for rehabilitation known as the Hand of Hope. But the device was too heavy for his target market – elderly patients.
What the trio developed years later was the use of lighter materials for a robotic hand device. The latest version of HandTasker weighs only about 150 grams.
Healthy aging
The World Economic Forum predicts that by 2050, more than 40% of the population of Hong Kong, South Korea and Japan will be aged 65 and over. The countries also represent the three markets with the largest elderly populations in the world.
As an advocate for senior living around the world, Tong said the goal for the next generation is to keep people healthy through technology.
"Everyone enjoyed their lives and everyone can enjoy good health even when they are 80 or 90 years old," Tong said.
Other technology: ExoMuscle
Moving forward, Tong said they have developed additional robotic technology to address rehabilitation for those with shoulder problems or walking problems.
This new type of technology is called ExoMuscle, which is a bionic artificial muscle that is similar in structure to skeletal muscle but surpasses it in terms of stress, load, power density and efficiency.
The technique can be used to lift a 20 kilogram bucket of water.
It is also adjustable, allowing it to achieve a variable control stress of up to 0.9 MPa. This makes it suitable for use in various joints and muscles of the upper limbs.
Tong said ExoMuscle can also be customized to meet the needs of different stroke patients during rehabilitation.
