In today's fast-paced and connected world, Public Relations has become a cornerstone of progress, understanding and collaboration for individuals, organizations and communities. The pivotal role of the profession in the development of a country cannot be underestimated as it facilitates effective communication, relationship building and creates positive perception on the domestic and international front.
The World Public Relations Day festival was very exciting for the industry. With a journey that started in the last quarter of last year, we took to the festival aisle because we wanted to ignite, uplift and capture the attention of policy makers and the general public about the importance of Public Relations.
Celebrating World PR Day is more than just an event – it is a testament to the art of promoting understanding, trust and transparency. It was an opportunity to reflect on how communication has evolved and continues to evolve with the advent of technology and dynamic shifts in global dynamics.
We kicked off the third edition of the World Public Relations Day festival with the Twitter Spaces series; then we moved into the slushy events and ended up with the big one – the WPRD Festival Summit.
Led by the Global Media Alliance with the support of industry stakeholders, the celebrations ran from April to 16 July 2023. The WPRD festival activities – both virtual and physical events – were aimed at bringing together experts, policy makers, PR professionals and academia to they discussed important issues related to the industry, connecting and building and elevating the PR community in Ghana.
With the theme 'Harnessing the Power of Public Relations', the festival touched on various aspects of the profession, including ESG & Sustainability, PR x Economy, PR Masterclass and PR x NextGen Women. During this celebration, we delved into the details of modern communications and explored the innovative strategies public relations professionals use to navigate a complex and rapidly changing environment.
For me, the key highlight of the festival is the representation of women – 54 percent of all speakers at the festival were women. The entire four-member Festival Summit panel, which was the main event, consisted of women with incredible career experiences who shared valuable insights with the audience. 84 percent of all panel moderators, MCs and hosts were also women. We also hosted a women-led event in partnership with Women in PR Ghana to engage the next generation of PR women.
We also brought what we call the 'cool factor' to the festival - The WPRD Festival-Boomplay Music Playlist, PR x Sustainability and our social impact initiative PR Masterclass for Start-ups. We thank all our partners, speakers and hosts, agencies, organizations, industry experts and associations for all their support in making the festival a success.
I cannot forget the team at Global Media Alliance – Senior Management Team led by our CEO Ernest Boateng, Heads of Departments, Staff and above all the core project team behind the WPRD Festival. We certainly built it for the industry. See you in 2024!
