The Emergency Command Post is conducting enforcement activities to restore peace in the Amhara region of Ethiopia. Accordingly, the command post said that most areas of the region are now returning to normal. Farmers resumed agricultural activities. Activities were also carried out to enhance service delivery by strengthening the peace created in the cities and towns of Amhara Regional State. This was made possible by the measures the National Defense Force (NDF) is taking to maintain peace and security of the public in the region.
According to the deputy mayor of Bahir Dar Dires Sahl, service providers have resumed providing normal services. City service institutions including transport and commercial activities are fully restored. According to him, consultations were also held with residents from all sub-towns of Bahir Dar to strengthen the peace created by the state of emergency.
The security situation in the Amhara region followed widespread unrest fueled by illegal armed groups. And this threatened the peace and safety of the public, disrupted all social and economic activities of the region. And this has prompted the Amhara regional state to request the intervention of the federal government to enforce law and order, saying the destabilization has caused a large scale of humanitarian, social and economic losses that cannot be controlled by regular law enforcement.
As a result, the Council of Ministers at its 23rd regular meeting unanimously adopted a decision to declare a state of emergency in the Amhara region. As the Federal Government is bound to uphold the constitutional order of the country, Members of Parliament (MP) have been summoned by the House of People's Representatives (HPR) for an emergency meeting. The HPR convened its 1st Extraordinary Session to review and vote for the State of Emergency in the Amhara Region. The House therefore thoroughly discussed the proposal to declare a state of emergency adopted by the Council of Ministers and approved it, with 12 abstentions and 16 against.
In an effort to ensure peace in the region, the command post has started work, the police and all law enforcement agencies have started performing their duties. According to the state of emergency command post, most areas of the Amhara region are returning to normal after the measures taken by the military operations.

He also gave a detailed overview of the security situation in the Amhara region, the rationale behind the declaration of the state of emergency and reiterated the government's strenuous efforts to restore law and order, protect civilians and reach a peaceful solution through dialogue to pave the way for a return to normalcy. According to him, looting and vandalism occurred because of the security problem in the city, especially in public administration institutions.
Head of the Amhara Agricultural Bureau, Hailemariam Kefyalw, told the Ethiopian News Agency about agricultural activities following the imposition of a state of emergency in the region. He said the success of the law enforcement operation will play a big role in stabilizing the food market as more than 4.4 million hectares of land have been covered with seeds in the region. He added that agricultural activities have been resumed and agricultural inputs have been secured and full development activities have been resumed.
Farmers in the region thus started agricultural activities in cooperation with management and experts. Approximately 5.29 million metric cents of fertilizer has been purchased for the region, of which approximately 4.2 million metric cents has already been distributed. Since the declaration of the state of emergency, soil fertilizer, carried by 370 vehicles, has also arrived in the region, he specified.
