New York Eyeing Cargo E-Bike as a replacement for deliveries

 If the NYC DOT gets their way, four-wheel cargo e-bikes will be allowed to ride on the city's bike lanes.

When it comes to propulsion, these 4-wheeled cargo bikes are equipped with pedals and use similar pedal support systems to regular e-bikes. As such, it can be argued that they should be classified as electric bikes. That being said, current e-bike regulations in the US dictate that e-bikes must have no more than two or three wheels. However, if the New York Department of Transportation has its way, four-wheeled cargo bikes could soon be classified as e-bikes, too, meaning they'll be able to go anywhere regular bikes can.

With that being said, the New York DOT will need to update their laws first, as these electric cargo bikes are too large to be classified as e-bikes. Currently, bike lanes in NYC are restricted for use by e-bikes no wider than 36 inches – cargo bikes carrying packages and food will naturally be wider. As such, the proposal includes increasing the size limit to 48 inches and the number of wheels from three to four. The proposal is still undergoing revisions, and the period for public comments is currently open. After that, NYC's DOT will hold a public hearing on the proposal on September 13, 2023.
