Motoring: All about Amarok 2023

 Now sharing some DNA with the Ford Ranger, VOLKSWAGEN's new Amarok is a strong contender in the highly competitive double-cab market.

It's especially cool when you dress up in Pan American garb. To find out how much the Amarok has gained from its blue oval sibling, I spent a few days testing it in South Africa.

Partner relations

Most, if not all, dual-cab enthusiasts already know that Ford Motor Group builds the new Volkswagen Amarok in Silverton, and that it's built on the acclaimed Ranger platform.

But how much Ford is really in the Amarok? Since this announcement, this is the pressing question on everyone's mind.

The 2023 Ford Ranger has descended on our markets like a cyclone, rocketing to the top of the sales charts, garnering universal acclaim and even winning the Car of the Year award – a first in the competition's history in South Africa.

As a result, everyone was left in the dark as to whether the new Amarok would simply be a Ford Ranger with a new coat of paint, as was the case with the Mercedes X Class-Nissan Navara fiasco of a few years ago, or whether it would be different enough from the original double cab to justify significant price difference.

To find out more, I drove the Pan-Americana for a few days in and around Johannesburg.

Styling

The Amarok will initially look similar to the Ranger to the untrained eye, as they share similar proportions, stance and bodywork. However, upon closer inspection, you'll be able to discern stark contrasts between the two vehicles.

The front elements including the radiator grille, headlights and trim are all characteristic of Volkswagen. It's all VW with sleek LED headlights, a grille that looks like it was taken from the Touareg, big VW insignia and a bright silver lower bar.

It's a bit more challenging from the rear, as there's not much to indicate that this is a VW product apart from the embossed tailgate.

Others may disagree, but I believe VW has made enough styling changes to the Amarok to set it apart from other vehicles with the badge.

A beautiful addition to the Pan Americana kit, which includes fashionable protective frames and 18" wheels.

Space and interior

After spending a significant amount of time with Ford's current lineup, it's quite invigorating to open the door anticipating a particular type of interior trim and be pleasantly surprised to be greeted by a full-leather interior similar to that seen in a VW SUV.

The center console and infotainment screen are inevitably Ford components, but aside from those two, the interior is all Volkswagen, and I was pleasantly surprised by the seamless integration of the two.

Rather than feeling like one interior has simply been layered over another, it feels like a well-thought-out combination that stands on its own.

Although not very comfortable, the double cab is functional as a double cab should be, with plenty of room for 5 full grown adults.

Comfort and convenience

A huge 12' screen dominates the center console, which is easily recognizable as a Ford, along with the switchgear, electronic shifter and selectors

However, the multi-function steering is part of the VW. Climate control, heated seats and the possibility of charging via USB, 12V and AC220V are standard equipment.

The center console, cubby and door cards have plenty of storage space. All in all, the Amarok's interior is a great place to spend some time, whether you're stuck in traffic for hours or driving across the veld.

Performance

Two engines are offered for the Pan-Americana derivative: a 3.0 V6 or a 2.0 BiTurbo, both mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission.

The smart 10-speed and now familiar version 2.0 were installed in my test Amarok. The 154kW/500Nm configuration gave a sense of familiarity that was unmistakably Ford-like.

The old adage "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" applies in this situation. Ford's drivetrain was already nearly flawless, so why mess with it?

Add to that the performance of the other fundamentals and you have a car that can easily handle VW's demanding criteria.

Fuel economy

Volkswagen advertises a consumption figure of 7.5L/100km, however my combined real-world on-road and off-road testing returned 9.8L/100km. This is consistent with the testing I achieved while driving the new Ford Ranger.

Safety

In ANCAP, the Volkswagen Amarok 2023 received a favorable 5 stars. This vehicle features numerous safety systems including Lane Keeping Assist, ISOFix, Electronic Brakeforce Distribution, Hill Decent Control, Blind Spot Monitoring, Traction and Stability Control and 7 airbags.

Competitors

The Amarok enters a competitive market where cars like the Toyota Hilux, Isuzu D-Max, Nissan Navara and of course the Ford Ranger are market leaders. Each of these cars has a premium version for affluent drivers who want a little more from their utility vehicle, and they're all equally capable.

My decision

The people who buy them are usually quite loyal to the brand, which makes the double cab market a special place. Toyota guys will be driving Hilux and so on. Ford guys will be Ford.

With a car that's built like a Ford but looks like a Volkswagen, Volkswagen has fought its way to a seat at the table and may be able to steal a few customers from other brands.

I admire what they've done here, but it remains to be seen if the Germans can develop a sense of humor and create a Raptor rival.
