Gear Review: HJC V10 Full Face Helmet

 The V10 is well priced, well built and could be your next retro lid too.

Retro helmets are rarely this graded, rarely this good, and rarely this anticipated. With the market so saturated with the same options over and over in different colorways, it's hard not to get excited when HJC decides to make one themselves.

HJC helmets have long been one of my favorites for quality, style and value for money. Overall, there is an HJC model that I can recommend to almost any rider shopping on almost any budget. The brand has found its way into the minds of many riders who appreciate the quality the brand can offer and I currently own quite a few Hong-Jin-Crown (HJC). From the i10 to the RPHA 11 to the V10, the latest lid in my rotation is from the South Korean helmet manufacturer.

I'm tired of seeing Arai Rapide Neos/Concept-X, Shoei Glamsters, AGV X3000 and not to mention Bell Bullitts and their cheap replicas on helmet racks in stores. I'm not a fan of the overpriced designer helmets from Ruby, Quart and Hedon, mainly because I've always been a value, safety and noise conscious rider. It's not that any of the helmets I've mentioned are bad per se (except maybe the Bell Bullitt, sorry), but a helmet built for today's market needs today's technology and safety ratings, something other brands have updated for . and what HJC built the V10 on. I may be getting tired of seeing this helmet, but if I see it, it will be for a good reason. Let me preface the rest of the review by saying that this is definitely a helmet you should consider picking up right now at $330.

Retro Aesthetics, Modern Construction

When HJC first revealed the V10, I was instantly sold. HJC hit the nail on the head with this design in my opinion as it takes cues from other classic car racing helmets (think Simpson, a bit of Biltwell and a bit of Arai) but adds the HJC motorcycle twist. on the mind. The result is a helmet that is distinctive, striking and interesting to look at, no matter what style of retro motorcycle you have.

The chin has a nice shape with six round vents in the front that give it a distinctive and rather fun look. The forehead has two snap-on vents, the HJC emblem is applied to the side and without a sticker, and the visor hinge also has a bit of a retro look to it. HJC has managed to nail down the details that make the retro helmet so desirable to many riders, and it's one that I find hard to fault. The details are spot on and maybe the only complaint I have is the lack of a proper exhaust port, but that's about it.

In addition, the helmet weighs only 1,380 grams or just 3.0 pounds. This helmet is a properly lightweight lid that even comes close to the other lightweight helmets in my collection, which can be attributed to the fact that it is a single vision lid with a fiberglass shell. While the helmet's visor is quite massive, its build quality is solid, and its safety rating is up to date, the helmet is remarkably light in the medium size, which is the second shell size in the size range. The split comes down to XS and S, while M and L share the same shell, and finally XL and others have the largest shell size. If you have a small head, you can expect this helmet to be even lighter.

Interior design and quality

Since the shell is so good, I have a few comments about the interior. Being used to the brand, I was surprised when I first tried the V10. The seat is more relaxed compared to other HJCs with a wide opening and cheek pads that aren't as tight as I'm used to. This is definitely a more lifestyle oriented helmet and wide face riders will feel comfortable wearing it with minimal break-in.

It's also clear that HJC didn't use a fully moisture-wicking fabric for its comfort liner, opting instead for a velor material on the top and cheek pads with a rougher texture compared to road helmets. I can see that HJC has gone for a more lifestyle approach when designing this helmet, so the fit and materials meet my expectations as the lid is aimed more at the casual rider. However, the material can tend to be quite toasty, but the more casual fit of the helmet allows things to stay fresh inside.

I wish the cheek pads would hug my jaw better and sit on my cheeks unlike other HJC helmets, but I still feel more secure in the helmet. You could say it's a lot less serious compared to my other HJCs, which it is, but I really wish the helmet hugged my jaw instead of sitting right on my cheeks. My nitpick is based on my own preferences and yours may differ.

Modern security and other features

The V10 is equipped with the latest, which not all retro helmets currently have. The big brands have gone through the certification process for the new standard, which offers helmets with several additional improvements, but HJC has specially developed this helmet to meet the current ECE standards, so the helmet is as good as it can be under the new rules set by the European Commission. .

In addition, we get deep speaker pockets for communication systems and the ability to install an integrated Smart HJC system, which I've never used because I keep Cardo Systems units on all my lids.

Another feature that is a surprise addition to this retro style lid is the emergency release cheekpieces. Being a retro helmet, the quick release pads are a very welcome safety feature on the helmet and I think it should be standard on all models from all brands just in case.

By bike

Most HJCs are wind tunnel tested, but this helmet skipped the tunnel test according to my local distributor. This news set off a few alarm bells in my head. During testing, I found that the helmet let in a noticeable amount of wind noise when traveling at 50 miles per hour. A lot of noise came through at 60mph and I struggled with this lid at over 70mph. Road HJCs generally tend to be decently quiet, but this was a fairly noisy clamshell. With the pads as loose as they were. I'm a little disappointed, but that's to be expected considering it's retro.

Still, the helmet was made to look good first and perform decently everywhere else. However, in terms of aerodynamics and ventilation, it is more than decent compared to other retro helmets. The six chin vents are divided into two groups. The bottom four vents vent to your face, while the top two vent to the visor. The front vents let in a decent amount of air, but the channels cut into the crash pad aren't very deep, so the top of the head gets plenty of ventilation.

There are no Venturi exhaust holes on this helmet, so the air evacuates out into the neck. Since this is also a more premium helmet, I appreciated that HJC threw in a free Pinlock 70 insert in the box.

However, being a retro style helmet, I'm willing to let some of its flaws go. The lid is still more aerodynamic than other retro helmets, has functional vents that actually go somewhere other than your face, and has exceptional visibility thanks to the large opening. I actually managed to fit a pair of goggles into the eye hole as well, which leads me to believe that this helmet can be used for real scramblers in an emergency. However, without glasses, the view is huge while wearing this helmet and I like that my peripheral vision is not restricted in any way.

I don't think it's suitable as a performance riding helmet, but for city stuff or to look good or maybe for more relaxed rides and riders, it works well, vents well enough at low speeds and is good. - proposed. I can argue that this helmet allows you to feel more of the world around you while riding, but that's a bit of a stretch considering it's a bit noisy at speed.

No helmet is perfect, but the HJC V10 is very decent for the price. In typical Hong Jin fashion, the V10 takes on its higher-priced competitors, offering the same, if not better, quality at a price that's significantly lower. At $330 for full colors and compared to the (in my opinion) overpriced Bell Bullitts and some other retro helmets, the V10 will be my choice. For context, the Bullitt may be stylish, but it's overpriced for the performance it offers at over $400. The only helmet that comes relatively close is the AGV X-3000, but that helmet uses an old-fashioned design, so consider that when comparing riding performance to the HJC V10.

With all the competing models listed, it's currently the best value for money in my opinion. It's only the Shoei Glamster or Arai Rapide Neo/Concept-X that holds a candle to the V10, and those are the big fish in the pond that HJC needs to reel in. It's about time HJC made a retro lid, and it's damn good.
