Sunyani, August 18, GNA – Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyemang Badu II, President, Bono Regional House of Chiefs, has appealed to the government to investigate the US$250 million spent by the Bank of Ghana (BoG) on a new office building project.
According to him, “BoG is not an independent institution but works in the best interest of Ghanaians”, saying it was unjustifiable for such a huge amount of money to be spent on the project at a time of the country's economic woes.
Osagyefo Agyemang Badu II, who is the “Dormaahene” (Principal Chief of Dormaa Traditional Area), made the call at the 2023 First General Assembly of the House held in Sunyani on Thursday.
The “Dormaahene” suggested that if each region received at least US$10 million out of this US$250 million, it would greatly accelerate holistic development in the country.
He cited that such amount could be used to fund education, health and agriculture programs as well as other nationally vital projects, saying it could lead to job creation that would help address unemployment in the country and subsequently to create wealth that would bring relief to Ghanaians.
Osagyefo Agyemang Badu II urged the government to convene the board and management of the BoG to further explain to Ghanaians the need for the project and the rationale for the US$250 million for it.
He said this was because some Ghanaians were not happy with the BoG's explanation, stressing that "the BoG exists and operates for national economic progress and the general public interest".
Osagyefo Agyemang Badu II has called for high journalistic standards in the nation's media practices, saying the country requires journalists to objectively investigate and report on issues of public interest to help keep duty bearers in check.
As part of the meeting, Osagyefo Ampem Anye Amoampong Tabrako III, Paramount Chief of Wenchi Traditional Area and Osabarima Asiedu Kotwi II, Paramount Chief of Kwatwoma Traditional Area in Jaman North District were received into the house.
Their induction brought the number of members of the House to 19, comprising 17 top chiefs and two division chiefs.
They were led by Osagyefo Agyemang Badu II to take the Oath of Membership while Justice Harry Acheampong-Opoku (Esq.), a Judge of the Sunyani High Court, also led them to take the Oath of Judicial and Secrecy.
Justice Acheampong-Opoku (Esq.) touched on the need for traditional leaders to approach and resolve issues in the context of the law and advised members of the House to read the Chieftaincy Act of 2008, Bill 759 and abide by its provisions.
He said this will help them in the proper administration of justice regarding adjudication of disputes, prevent incidents of contempt cases and reduce the level of chieftaincy disputes in the region.
