Estonian Prime Minister Kallas has been hit by confusion due to her husband's ties to Russia

 Opposition leaders in Estonia have called on their leader to resign after it emerged that her husband's company continued to operate in Russia.

The party announced on Friday that it was starting to discuss a motion of no confidence in Prime Minister Kaja Kallas, while another opposition group, Isamaa, said the scandal had caused "significant damage to Estonia's interests and reputation".

Estonian public broadcaster ERR reported on Wednesday that shipping firm Stark Logistics, partly owned by Kallas' husband Arvo Hallik, continued to do business with Russia after it invaded Ukraine.

The revelations are an embarrassment to Kallas, who has repeatedly expressed her strong support for Kyiv.

All trade with Russia must "stop as long as Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine continues", she said after the revelations.

In a press release issued earlier this week, Stark Logistics said it has only one Estonian client, Metaprint, which is currently in the process of closing its plant in Russia.

Kallas said her husband's company was helping his Estonian clients in Russia "in accordance with the laws and sanctions" currently in place.

On Friday, Hallik apologized "for the harm caused to my wife" and said he would immediately sell his shares in Stark Logistics and leave the company.

He claimed she was "unaware" of his professional activities.

Metaprint CEO and majority shareholder of Stark Logistics Martti Lemendik told ERR on Friday that the company has generated almost 30 million euros in sales in Russia since Moscow invaded Ukraine.

Two opinion polls commissioned in the wake of the scandal show that a majority of respondents want Kallas to step down as prime minister. But supporters in her liberal Reform Party want her to stay put.

Some 57% of respondents said Kallas should rule as head of government, 31% said she should provide an explanation but stay put, while 7% opted for "do nothing", according to the survey commissioned by the conservative think tank Institute for Social studies

Some media in Estonia also called for Kallas to resign.

The daily Eesti Päevaleht claimed that she "should submit her letter of resignation", even though she "necessarily left her post".

The Postimees newspaper found Kallas's explanation insufficient and advised the Prime Minister "to start packing her bags today to avoid further embarrassment in the future."

Kallas' government, a coalition between his Reform Party, the Social Democrats and Estonia 200, was formed on 17 April. It has 60 seats out of 101 in the state parliament.
