World Cup: USA meets Dutch resistance in a sign of the times

 Four years in women's football is a lifetime.

Since the United States swept the Netherlands with ease in the 2019 World Cup final in Lyon, the landscape of the women's game has completely changed.

When the teams played out a fiery draw in their Group E match at this year's Wellington tournament, it was clear that the same names remained on both sides.

"What is left of their supremacy?" Dutch head coach Andries Jonker joked before the game.

The answer, no doubt, is that the continued investment, expansion and growth of the women's game around the world since the US won its fourth world title has shown that the rest of the chasing pack is finally catching up.

An air of invincibility surrounded Team USA in 2019, with many teams being defeated before they even stepped on the field undeniably a key part of their victory.

That was the case for the Dutch in France, who mustered just one shot on target in 90 minutes as they lost 2-0 in their first World Cup final.

In a raucous Cake Tin in the New Zealand capital, Jonker's side produced perhaps their best 45 minutes of World Cup play as Jill Roord's superb strike from the edge of the box gave the Netherlands the lead against the run of play.

The goal hinted at Jonker's belief in the development of the women's game as he questioned whether there was still a gap between the United States and "the rest."

"The intensity of European football has really increased over the last couple of years, as has the fitness," Jonkers told ESPN.

"In the past, American women were much more fit than the rest of the world, but I really think those days are gone. If you look at the Champions League today, you see the same level of intensity."

"We are better or very close to them"

Although the USA, with a team that had six players making their first World Cup appearance, struggled to gain ground in the first half, forward Sophia Smith bristled at Jonker's suggestion that the gap was closing due to fitness.

"No team is more capable than us," she told DW. "I don't know what the comment is, but we're fit enough, we're capable enough, we just didn't get on the front foot."

But with the Dutch enjoying 61 per cent possession in the first half, Dominique Janssen, who watched in agony as she dunked a half-volley into the roof of the net to make it 2-0, echoed her coach's thoughts.

"Since the coach has been with us for the last year, he has really helped us," Janssen explained to DW. “He really made us believe in everything we do and made us work really hard.

"We as a team are constantly evolving. Obviously in women's football in general you see the level getting better and better. That showed today.

"It was nice to see that we can get a point against the USA and hopefully one day we can also get three points against them."

Goalkeeper Daphne van Domselaar, who saved well from Trinity Rodman and Smith in the second half to ensure her side walked away with a share of the spoils, went one step further.

A smiling van Domselaar added: "Four years has been a long time and we have grown since then. I think we have shown the whole world that we are better or very close to them."

While the Netherlands put in an impressive display in Wellington, they are far from the only team to show an improvement in their play around the world.

Debutantes impress

The 2019 tournament began with the United States defeating Thailand 13-0 in their opening game, recording the largest margin of victory in history and leaving the Thai players in tears.

With the competition expanding from 24 to 32 teams this year, there were understandable fears of many more scrappy matches.

Although Vietnam lost 3-0 against the USA, goalkeeper Tran Thi Kim Thanh made some impressive saves, even keeping out Alex Morgan's penalty.

Speaking of the clear improvement from the lower-ranked teams, Morgan said: "There were concerns about quality but that was quelled pretty quickly in the first few games."

Fellow debutants Haiti suffered somewhat unfortunate 1-0 defeats against European champions England and Jamaica to pick up their first ever World Cup point against a much-vaunted French side.

That came as no surprise to US head coach Vlatko Andonovski, who explained: "The teams ranked 15-40 in the world are probably the ones that have grown the most and that's what makes this tournament interesting."

The fight for equality continues

But for Morgan, the most important difference between the 2019 World Cup and this year is that the team's fight for equality is behind them.

She recalled fighting the legal battle while simultaneously trying to win soccer's biggest tournament as an unwelcome and exhausting distraction.

Players from Canada, France, Spain, Haiti and Zambia have all run into trouble with their federations at this tournament.

However, while the United States' own fight may be over, Morgan and the entire team are aware of their responsibility to bring players from around the world together.

"Not having distractions like having to fight for equal pay or equal working conditions, that's huge again," she said. "I hope this will soon be the case for all players around the world

"As much as we can, as much as they want, we will continue to support all the other players who are fighting the fight that we have been fighting for so long."
